Right, so. Things happened, Varric told stories, and now Pan knows Fenris was a slave.

Which makes him feel pretty fucking shitty about how well they had gotten along the first few times they've met.  Or, rather, how they hadn't gotten along at all every time they've ever interacted.

And that's how he ended up in Hightown for the first time, and was this really the right place? It was, well, a mansion. In a not-sewer. Hell, it wasn't even in Lowtown! But this is where he had been told to go, so Pan Knocked on the door, and tried to focus more on looking around than thinking about what he was going to say. Or that he didn't know what he was going to say. Bit run down though, wasn't it? How did he get a mansion anyways? Wasn't all of Hawke's crew scrounging for money? They all talked about it enough.

Would Fenris even be able to hear the knocking? He tried again.

How do words? I cannot words correctly.

Fenris, back in the master bedroom with a bottle of wine, did not hear Pan knocking. He took another swig, enjoying the warmth the alcohol left in its wake. This was a fine vintage, as most of Danarius' stock seemed to be. He had managed to sell off a few bottles to supplement the meager income he gathered from playing mercenary for Meeran on occasion. He didn't like the man, but food was a necessity, and he couldn't rely on the larders of this place much longer.

He tried not to inhale through his nose, though, as the stench of decay was already permeating the place - especially the front hall, the staircase, and the area around the bedrooms. But Fenris would not remove those bodies - they were his insurance policy, should Danarius return unexpectedly.

At some point, Fenris did hear the knocking. He couldn't really ignore it since it might be Hawke, come to ask for his help; therefore, he put down the wine - without throwing the bottle, since it wasn't empty yet - and went to get the door.

And when he opened it, he had to look around to find the one who did the knocking - the little human with the affinity for mages.

"Well, this is unexpected."

Sorry, Pan, that's all you're getting, but at least it's more civil than it could have been.

Fenris is not in the mood for this

"Are you lost?" the elf asked, quirking an eyebrow. He didn't particularly like this one, either. Actually, he might hate the boy. It would fit with his general worldview at the moment. But Hawke's pet healer liked the kid, which meant Hawke didn't want the kid harmed. So Fenris would just have to put up with him long enough to get him back where he belonged...

Damn.

Not at this point in the plot, no

"Apologize?" Yes, it was in fact a glare - rather, a glower, since Fenris wasn't feeling actively murderous right now. His distaste was audible, but it seemed his interest had at least been piqued.

"No, by all means. This I have to hear." The spooky, spiky murder elf crossed his arms, his expression still dour but tinged with curiosity.

...Wait, an actual apology without a backhanded comment to shift blame? Well then. Surprise flashed across his face before it resumed its normal broody expression. Maybe... Maybe he had been a little hard on the kid.

"I must admit, I expected you to continue doing so. It's refreshing to see someone who takes responsibility for their actions. You're entitled to your opinion, however foolish, and I won't try to talk you out of it." Less dour now, so that's good. He's not pissed, and he's trying not to be a fuckwad!

Which really isn't easy at this point in the plot, as much as I adore him...

Pan doesn't know about people rotting, does he?

Fenris heaved a longsuffering sigh and stepped out. "I'll show you the way. I doubt anyone would take particular notice of you at this hour, but Hawke would have my head if something did happen." And yes, before he closed the door there was a very good view of three or four mouldering corpses in the main hall.

"Don't have a strong stomach, I take it?" Fenris said conversationally - or at least as conversationally as he got, which usually ranged from disinterested to gruff.

And Fenris looked down at him in turn, eyebrow raised and features arranged in an expression of mild distaste. "Don't waste your pity on them. Slavers deserve nothing but a swift death."

No harm in explaining. Besides, he wanted to see how the kid would react to it. "They're an insurance policy of sorts, in case Danarius decides to drop in unexpectedly to reclaim his manor. Perhaps they'll even distract him long enough for me to finish him."

Okay, that got even darker

"The man who claims to own me," Fenris said drily, his hatred for his former master leeching into his words. One day, he would use these godforsaken markings to rip Danarius' heart out so he could grind it into the dust.

There was only a nod in response as Fenris led the way to the Hanged Man. He didn't particularly feel like carrying out a conversation, and it didn't seem like Pan did, either.
